CAUL

The Caul is the delicate membrane that encases the fetus. In many cultures, to be born in an unbroken caul is to be marked as endowed with supernatural powers or to bring luck.

"For me this series of Caul images has a special meaning.
There is the texture of the Caul itself. When it touches the body it merges with it, becoming invisible....one with the subject. Where the subjects movement or gesture has drawn the material away from the body, it seems to me an extension of the skin, as if the human spirit were trying somehow to burst its physical bonds."

In his Caul Series, Len Steckler explores the very timid, secret, and always private human soul, through the confines of the translucent embryonic membrane.

"Sheer Nude"
30" x 20"

This photograph was taken during an assignment for VOGUE magazine in 1965. The model, Lisa, found herself enchanted by the solitude within the chiffon fabric. She is both peaceful, and sensual hidden within the material, and herself.

Artes print, $5500.

"Metaphysical"
Oil on Canvas
48" x 36"

This was painted in 1998. It was an experiment for me, vis-à-vis, the subject's secret sensuality mixed with her spirituality. It reminds me of an 'out-of-body' experience that she seems to undergo. She floats in a reverie of grace.

"Pink"
Oil on Canvas
26" x 32"

I painted this woman as a consummate embodiment of female beauty. Graceful, alluring ,voluptuous, and delicate. She haunts me.

"Self Embrace"
20" x 20"

First published in "INFINITY," the magazine of the American Society of Magazine Photographers (1965), this painting was part of my "Caul" series. Caul represents the placenta, the thin membrane that holds the fetus, and is often called the afterbirth. In some societies it is considered a good omen to be born within an unbroken placenta. This painting exudes the innocence of a newborn baby.

Artes print, $5500.

"Caul Fusion"
27" x 24"

This is one of my photographs
from the 60's.
Through computer technology,
I combined it with a small panel from a painting I did last year.
The end result is a contemporary
vision of female beauty within the caul.

Artes Print, $5500.

"Carmella"
18" x 24"

I photographed this model during a break
while on a fashion assignment, circa 1964.
I asked her to pose with the "caul"
(a piece of chiffon material replicating the placenta).
The resulting image is beautiful.
She is WOMAN in all her innocence and perfection.

Artes print, $5000.

"Embrace-Standing"
20" x 14"

I shot this photograph in the early 90's, when I began experimenting with couples posing within the "caul". The result was extraordinarily erotic and appealing. It depicts the magnificence of their love, and they seem to be transported into another place.

Artes Print, $5000.

"Alone"
27" x 24"

This is derived from a photographic session in the early 1990's. This model felt fear and panic when encased in the material. She was on edge and extremely claustrophobic. It was an unusual reaction, and I found it very poignant.

Artes Print, $5000.

"Wendy"
27" x 24"

A very recent photograph that is actually three exposures in one. It was as if she was having a metaphysical experience while within the material. She wanted to stay entangled, and I was fascinated by her reaction.

Salon Print, $5000.

"Embrace-Lying"
Oil on Canvas
50" x 78"

This couple was painted as if they were floating on air,
wrapped in each other and their love.
It is sensual and beautiful.
I painted this piece in the fundamental style
of the romantic era of painters in Italy, but
with a decidedly contemporary mood.
It causes the onlooker to become part of the ambience
of their very private moment.

Original $30,000.
